December 10, 2015: As our last meeting of the year, we will host our Christmas party at Jacksons Bar & Bistro located in Soho Square in Homewood from 6:15p-8:15p. Feel free to bring your spouse or significant other. ASIS Birmingham will provide appetizers. Hope to see you there!

December 8, 2015: Our Chapter is co-hosting an Investigation Seminar at the Federal Reserve Bank Facility. The Investigator Seminar accounts for 8 hours of CEU's for ASIS, MCJEA, and various other LE certifications. Both the public and private sector are welcome to attend. Fees for ASIS/MCJEA members are $25 and Non-members are $45 (which includes training materials/coffee/breakfast/lunch). November 5, 2015: Our next meeting is Tuesday, November 10th, same time and place as always! Our guest speaker is Mr. Mark Quimby, Manager of Training, Security Engineers, Inc. will discuss "The Proper Approach To Arming A Security Officer". October 8, 2015: October already, I was just settling in to summer.....
Please join us (and bring friends, colleagues, and anyone interested) to this month's meeting on Tuesday, October 13. Our guest speaker, Mr. Mike King, superintendant of the Center for Domestic Preparedness, a division of DHS/FEMA, will explain the who, what, where, when and how of the CDP. September 10, 2015: Our LEAD luncheon was another success! Attendence was great, many local law enforcement agencies and local corporations sent representatives, and the awards and associated descriptions of successful investigations and acts of valor were inspiring. Pictures of the event are posted on the LEAD page.  Don't forget; our next meeting is October 13th.

September 8, 2015: In lieu of our September meeting, our chapter will be hosting the Law Enforcement Appreciation Day lunch at The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #1 located at 2988 Winewood Road, Birmingham, Alabama, 35215 (turn right off Pinson Valley Parkway, Hwy #79, just north of Tarrant City) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a day to honor those who have shown exemplary service in the field of law enforcement and the day will include a delicious meal from Full Moon BBQ a prestigious guest speaker and an awards ceremony. August 11, 2015: Our August meeting will be in our regular location on the regular day and time! Our speaker is Sgt. Amy Schreiner with the University of Alabama at Birmingham Police. She will be sharing the A.L.I.C.E (Alert-Lockdown-Information-Counter-Evaluate) method utilized at the UAB campus and other campuses nationwide. As always, meetings are free and RSVP is not required. We hope to see you there.

July 25, 2015: Our local chapter is hosting a seminar training series called "Seeking the Truth: Maximizing Statements & Interviews" at the Alabama Power Building at 1313 6th Ave N, Birmingham, AL from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Cost of the event is $25 for ASIS members and $30 for non members. For more information, contact our Law Enforcement Liaison, Lynn Shobe at lynn.shobe@alea.gov or 205‐243‐1223. This event is open to the public and private sector. Pre‐registration not necessary. Walk‐ins welcome, subject to available space. Certificates will be issued for 6 hour APOSTC credit for law enforcement officers. CPE credit is also available for Certified Fraud Examiners.

July 14, 2015: Our July meeting will be held on the 14th in the Alabama Power Atrium, Electra room, as usual. Our speaker will be our own YP liaison,, Ryan Schwoebel, CFE who will be discussing the topic, "Conducting Internal Investigations". As always, meetings are no cost, and no RSVP is required.  

June 9, 2015: Our June meeting will be held in our usual venue and our guest speaker will be Patrick Lamb who will share issues concerning Identity Theft. Patrick Lamb is a graduate of the University of Montevallo and Cumberland School of Law. He served as an Assistant District Attorney in Morgan County, Alabama from 1993 through 1998 and again from 2000 through 2002. He was in private practice from 1998 through 2000 with a specialty in Real Estate and Creditor’s Rights. He served as Secretary of the Morgan County Bar, President of the Morgan County Young Lawyers, President of the Morgan County Junior Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Board of Directors of the Morgan County Chamber of Commerce. Patrick served as a Special Assistant Attorney General prosecuting cases in Lawrence County and Lauderdale County. He has contributed articles to the Alabama Prosecutor was also the organizer and director of the 2007 Birmingham Metropolitan Identity Theft Summit. He has taught as an adjunct professor at Calhoun Community College, at the Birmingham Police Academy, the Hoover Police Department, the FBI National Academy, and the Alabama District Attorney’s Association. Since January 2003, he has served as a Deputy District Attorney in the Birmingham Division of Jefferson County, Alabama. He currently is assigned to serve as a Supervising Attorney in the new White Collar and Public Corruption Unit. He is one of the few prosecutors in the state to prosecute an open meeting lawsuit, a quo warranto lawsuit to remove a public official, and be sued for several million dollars by sovereign citizens of the republic of Alabama. His greatest accomplishment is marrying Jane Aycock Lamb and sharing three loud unruly boys with her.

May 12, 2015: Our May meeting will be held in our usual venue and our guest speaker will be Debra Davis, CPP and she will cover the topic entitled" Securing the Disaster Zone". Debra is the Area Investigator for Alabama Power company where she has Corporate Security Responsibility for the Eastern Division territory of Alabama Power Company. Previously, she served as Corporate Security Training Coordinator for Alabama Power where she developed and delivered training curriculum for armed Security Force. Her certifications include Certified Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor (Pistol & Shotgun), Certified Chemical Weapons Instructor, Certified Instructor PPCT, Certified Instructor State & Local Anti-Terrorism, Certified Instructor Verbal Judo, and Certified Instructor Weapons of Mass Destruction. Debra is also a retired Lieutenant with the Anniston Police Department and is worked in Patrol, Accident Investigation Unit, Investigative Division, Detective Sergeant, Patrol Sergeant, Special Operations Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, Training and Inspections and served as Crisis Negotiator. There is no cost to attend our meetings, and no RSVP is required.

April 14, 2015: Our April Meeting will be in our regular room and regular time. Our guest speaker will be Bill Mayfield, RN and the topic will be Health Incident Management: The Security Branch Function. Bill has been a Registered Nurse for over 30 years, and concurrently has 20 years of fire service, Hazmat, and emergency management experience. He currently serves as the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for UAB Medicine, based in Birmingham, Alabama. As always, meetings are no cost, and no RSVP is required.  

March 10, 2015: Our March meeting will be held in our usual venue and our guest speaker is our own YP liaison, Ryan Schwoebel, CFE. He will be speaking on Procurement Fraud. Ryan Schwoebel is an assistant vice president with Regions Bank's Anti-money Laundering Compliance department. Prior to this he worked in investigations in the private sector and law enforcement since 2004, including 4 years as a special agent with NCIS in Norfolk, VA. He teaches as adjunct faculty for UAB and Troy University in the areas of criminal justice and security, and is a member of the ASIS Economic Crimes Council. There is no cost to attend our meetings, and no RSVP is required.

February 5, 2015: Our February meeting will be held on the 10th in the Alabama Power Atrium, Electra room, as usual. Our speaker will be Supervisory Special Agent Chris Hoffman of the Birmingham AL FBI Field Office. SSA Hoffman commands the Counter Terrorism Squad and the North Alabama Joint Terrorism Task Force. As always, meetings are no cost, and no RSVP is required.  

January 5, 2015: Our first meeting of the year will be in our regular location on the regular day and time! Tuesday, January 13, 2015 we will meet at the Alabama Power location at 11:30. Our speaker will be Ms. Alexa James, Development Director of The Wellhouse, a nonprofit, faith-based and Christ centered organization devoted to the rescue and recover of women who have been sexually exploited. As always, meetings are free and RSVP is not required. We hope to see you there.

October 13, 2014: Our next meeting will be in our regular location on the regular day! October 14, 2014; informal gathering 11:30 to 12:00, presentation begins at 12:00 noon. Mr. Anthony B. Purcell, Assistant Vice President and Chief of Police, University of Alabama/Birmingham will discuss "Partnerships between security and police".

August 18, 2014: Our September meeting will again be our annual LEAD, Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. August 1, 2014: Our August meeting will be Tuesday, August 12, 2014 in our regular location, the Electra Room in the Alabama Power HQ. Our speaker will be Ms. Theresa Thorne, Executive Director of Birmingham's City Action Partnership, and her topic will be "Law Enforcement & Security: How to Forge a Working Partnership".

July 8, 2014: Our August meeting will be on Tuesday, August 12 in our regular location, the Electra Room in the Alabama Power lobby. The speaker is Shelby County Chief Deputy John Samaniego and his topic will be "An update on Shelby County law enforcement and challenges".

July 8, 2014: Our next meeting will be July 8, 2014 in our regular location. This month's speaker will be Shelby County Alabama Sherriff's Office Chief Deputy John Samaniego. The topic will be An Update on Sherriff’s Office and Law enforcement Challenges. 

June 2, 2014: Our next chapter meeting will be Tuesday, June 10, 2014 in our regular Electra Room location in the Alabama Power lobby. Our speaker, the second in our Summer Guest Speaker Series will be Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon K. Falls; his topic will be "Sentencing in Alabama". Members and guests are encouraged to attend and bring a friend; as always no RSVP or fee is required.

June 2, 2014: Our first Chapter Scholarship has been awarded to Mr. Ryan Schwobel, CFE. Ryan will be able to take his pick of certification assitance by selecting one of the following: 1 scholarship to the certification course (ASIS prep course for CPP, PSP, PCP), OR a subscription (1 year) to the POA manual. Ryan, come on down and claim your award! 

May 13, 2014: Our first meeting of the Summer Guest Speaker Series was a success with Birmingham's Police Chief A.C.Roper addressing our group. His time was cut short by some pressing issues, but the discussion was informative and well received.

April 30, 2014: Our next meeting will be May 13, 2014. It will be the first in our summer speaker series, this month we will feature our own Birmingham Police Department Chief A.C. Roper! The meeting will be at Alabama Power, but in a different room. Please click here for directions and to RSVP. April 2, 2014: Chapter Scholarship Notice: As we have discussed at our recent chapter meetings, our chaper will select one chapter member, in good standing, who applies for the following: 1 scholarship to the certification course (ASIS prep course for CPP, PSP, PCP), OR a subscription (1 year) to the POA manual. If interested in consideration, please forward a written request, including what award you seek, and why you are deserving, to the Chapter Secretary, John Hassard, MS, CPP, CFE, LPC at jhassard@live.com. If you are interested in serving on the award selection committee this spring(no certification is required, but you can't apply for an award THIS year!), email John Hassard as well. Deadline for submissions is April 22, 2014, which is 2 weeks after our next meeting, so get those emails in.

March 25, 2014: Our meeting for April will be on Tuesday, April 8 at the regular time and place. The topic will be "Procurement Fraud", presented by our own Ryan Schwoebel, CFE.

March 11, 2014: Our March 11, 1014 meeting topic will be ALICE in a Business Setting (Alert, Lockdown, Information, Counter Evacuation) presented by Sgt. Juan Rodriguez of the Homewood, AL PD.

Feb 27, 2014: Our chapter social event for this quarter will be Thursday, February 27. We will meet for an informal shootout at Security Engineers at 4:00. You may bring your own pistol and ammo, or borrow one from a member or the range. Ammo is available for purchase if you don't bring any. Afterwards we will retire to the Rogue Tavern for drinks and discussion..... Click here for a flyer with details and directions. January 23, 2014: Our next chapter meeting will be Tuesday, February 11 at Alabama Power. Our speaker will be Mr. Ray Kilburn presenting "Cellphone and Computer Forensics".

January 23, 2014: Due to the changes in how the POA (Protection of Assets) Manual is managed online we no longer offer complimentary access to chapter members as a benefit of membership (it is now assigned to a specific user ID). In lieu of that, we have both lowered the chapter dues to $25.00 per year (and they are now due!), and we are rolling out a scholarship to any active chapter member to allow them to use it for certification-related items such as the POA manual (online access) or a study course for one of the ASIS certifications. We will explain the details in the February chapter meeting and begin accepting applications for this. If you are unable to attend the February meeting and are interested in this, contact any chapter officer after that meeting.

FEMA and Oakwood University are conducting a COOP Planners Training Course designed for persons charged with managing Continuity Of Operations Plan. This train-the-trainer seminar will be conducted February 3-5, 2014 at Oakwood Univeristy in Huntsville, AL. December 19, 2012: Our own Scott Starkey will be a featured speaker at the 2013 TechSecSolutions New Technology Conference in February in sunny Ft. Lauderdale.  For more information, click here.

December 19, 2012: Our 2012 Chapter Christmas Party was a success!  We had about 16 attend, and no bar fights!   We had almost as many door prizes as attendees, and the food was great.  What a great venue, please join us next year.....

November 26, 2013: Rundown on Christmas Party: Our party will be held in lieu of our December meeting at 6:00PM on Thursday, January 8 2013 at Pale Eddie's Pour House, 2902 2nd Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203.  The meal will be catered by The Homewood Gourmet, and the cost is $25.00 per person.  Chapter members are encouraged to bring their spouse or significant other.  A fully stocked and staffed cash bar will be on site!

November 25, 2013: Party Sponsorship: We are seeking corporate sponsors for our annual chapter Christmas Party.  Sponsors get mention in the invitations, listing in the slide show during the party, and door prizes attribited to your company.  Sponsorship is inexpensive, so contact any chapter officer if interested.

November 25, 2012: Flyers have been emailed for the Chapter Christmas Party, to be held on Thursday, December 8, 2013 at 6:00PM at Pale Eddie's Pour House.  We need your confirmation by December 3.  Please contact any chapter officer for additional information.

October 11, 2012: Several members have asked about another chapter after business hours social event.  Watch this space for news, we are knocking around ides.  Most likely another evening at the indoor range, followed by a debreifing at Old Car Heaven, sometime in the next several weeks.  Contact John Hassard with any suggestions.

October 10, 2012: The US Dpt of Homeland Security is presenting an Improvied Explosive Device (IED) Workshop on November 8, 2012 in Clanton, AL.  Click here for a flyer with inforrmation and a link to register for this no-cost workshop.

October 9, 2012: Our chapter held the 2012 field trip today.  13 Members met in Vance, AL for a quick lunch in their training facility them we had a guided tour of the facility.  Click here for a picture.  Sorry we didn't take more, cameras were verboden inside the plant!

October 8, 2012: ASIS International awards many scolarshps and awards each year to not only chapters, but individuals and groups as well.  Take a look and see if you are interested in any; like the lottery, you can't win if you don't play!  Click here for a brochure explaining available scholarships and awards.  Contact a chapter officer if you need additional information regarding any of these.

September 11, 2012: LEAD was held today.  We met our sponsorship goals, the weather cooperated and attendence was great.  Pictures will be posted shortly.

September 5, 2012: Our own chapter member, Ms. Carol Dodgen is presentin a webinar "Workplace Violence: Recognize and Prevent" for the SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) and cosponsored by the Middle Tennessee chapter of InfraGard.  

August 15, 2012: Our next meeting will be September 11, 2012.  This will be our annual LEAD; Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, and will be conducted at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #12988 Winewood Rd, Birmingham, AL 35215  (map), from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM.  Lunch will be caterd by Full Moon Barbeque.  
As are all of our chapter meetings, there is no cost to attend.

August 15, 2012: Our first Vendor Technology Show was held yesterday.  9 vendors and over 30 interested security professionals attended.  Food was plentiful, many networking opportunites were realized, and some new products and services were introduced.  Several door prizes, courtesy of the chapter, including ASIS Insulated Travel Mugs, a Visa Gift Card, and a Nook E-Reader were awarded to participants.  For our first attempt at this type of meeting it seemed to be a success, and we hope to expand upon this format in the future.  Please keep in mind we will repeat this next summer, so if you are a vendor wishing to participate, or know of a vendor we should invite, please contact any chapter officer.
