Jared Loughner, the Arizona community college student charged with shooting U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords in January 2011, was suspended from his community college the previous fall because of disturbing YouTube post. Although Loughner choose a political figure for his assault, the campus was prepared and intervened to stop a possible shooting at the school due their vigilance of Social Media.
The burgeoning use of social media is a factor in how many people communicate and express themselves, even when it is a threat or incriminating. This presentation will show how to research and analyze social media activity to identify and intervene potential threats of violence. In fact, many shootings were "advertised" immediately prior to the assault. In addition, we will look at how social media has a role in Loss Prevention and Flash Mob prevention. The advent of mob robbery and riots has been facilitated by Social Media but can also be used to stop it. Finally, we can see how while this concept can hamper emergency response, it can also be a resource for crisis management.
The presentation will several review free tools that are available to begin using this powerful tool in the prevention of violence.
